The paper trail of 1981.

What survives of APYTR's founding sits in seven folders in a cold room at Meridian Flats. Most of it is legible. Some of it will stay blacked out no matter what you type. Request declassification below to lift the bars we're allowed to lift.

Articles of Establishment

We, the undersigned, establish at Meridian Flats a laboratory for the study of kinetic effect, to be known as Advanced Physics Yield & Technology Research.

The premise is a single sentence, and it is not new: the destructive potential of an ordinary object is a solvable equation. We intend to solve it, measure it, and be honest about the answer. The hangar has no heat and one working outlet. It will do.

Codename PENDULUM — Theory of Guided Descent

A theoretical study. No article was built. No article is proposed.

The object requires no ████████ on the way down; gravity provides the entire budget. Everything expensive happens on the way up, and everything difficult happens in the last ██ seconds. Guidance is the only hard problem; the rest is arithmetic and patience.

Method of █████████████ is out of scope for this study and remains ████████.

The Overshoot

Summary: a PENDULUM descent model departed its designated box and impacted approximately forty kilometers downrange, leaving a shallow bowl in the playa.

The feature has been informally designated "The Dimple" and, effective immediately, is adopted as the zero-marker for all Range-04 solutions. Nobody was downrange. We checked twice, then a third time.

Camera Four

Recurring: an optical return on Camera 4, downrange, with no shot on the schedule.

Range Operations attributes the return to thermal shear off the lakebed at 0300 local, which is consistent with the timestamps. The operators on shift ██████████ and continue to file reports. This office considers the matter ████████.

WARDEN — First Clean Intercept

Result: hit-to-kill achieved at combined Mach 12. No warhead carried. No warhead required. Target sled destroyed by momentum alone.

Time of shot: 23:58, December 24th. We fired because the window was open and nobody wanted to wait until January. The napkin from the Mach Table bearing the original velocity estimate has been entered as Exhibit A and is not to be laundered.

The Yield Model, v0

Note to file. The "Y" in APYTR is, as of today, no longer a placeholder.

The model computes the energy an object delivers on arrival — one half of its mass times the square of its velocity — and, far harder, the energy it does not deliver: what scatters, what deforms, what is spent making noise. The first number is a homework problem. The second is the company. Everything downstream is bookkeeping.

The Ninth

Name: █████████████. Role: ██████████. Division: ████████. Photograph: not on file.

One of the nine signatures on the 1981 charter has never been matched to a personnel record. Attempts to reconstruct the ninth engineer's identity have been ██████████. This file is sealed by order of ████████.

Some of us think there were only ever eight.
